As one of the earliest clinical departments in our hospital, the Ophthalmology Department was established in 1974. Through the joint efforts of several generations, it has made a leap forward development. In 2017, it was approved as a key medical discipline (construction) of Grade A in Sichuan Province, integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research and blindness prevention with increasing academic influence. Since 2016, it has been nominated for the Southwest region of Fudan Specialty Reputation Ranking for 7 consecutive years. The latest data show that the Accumulative Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (ASTEM) of the Ophthalmology Department from 2018 to 2022 ranks the 54th in China, and the academic ability is at the leading level in Southwest China.
The Ophthalmology Department has always taken the discipline development and discipline platform construction as the focus of its work, and has opened a number of sub-specialties such as cataract, fundus disease, optometry, glaucoma, orbital disease, plastic surgery, keratopathy, strabismus and pediatric ophthalmology, which have assembled a group of excellent professional and technical talents. The faculty consists of a total of 22 ophthalmologists, including 2 chief ophthalmologists, 7 associate chief ophthalmologists, 8 individuals holding Doctorate degrees, and 13 individuals with Master's degrees. The faculty consists of 1 doctoral supervisor, 5 master supervisors, and 5 individuals with international experience. Currently, there are 7 ophthalmic examiners and 25 nurses. There is 1 academic and technological leader in Sichuan Province, along with 1 exceptional expert who has made outstanding contributions to the province. Additionally, there are 2 academic and technological leaders within the Sichuan Provincial Health Commission, 3 reserve candidates for academic and technological leaders in Sichuan Province, and 2 reserve candidates for academic and technological leaders in Sichuan Provincial Health Commission. In the clinical aspect of cataract, femtosecond assisted micro-incision phacoemulsification can implant almost all advanced intraocular lenses in the world, such as astigmatism correction type, presbyopia correction type (three-focus, diffraction, regional refraction, refraction, extended depth of field), as well as new intraocular lenses such as astigmatism multi-focus; To carry out complex cataract surgery such as lens dislocation and intrascleral or suspended intraocular lens implantation, ICL and TICL implantation in myopia. In the field of fundus diseases, we have minimally invasive vitrectomy equipment, and carry out 25g and 27g minimally invasive vitrectomy to treat various diseases, including vitreous hemorrhage, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, intraocular foreign body, etc. Its other sub-specialty also carries out international and domestic advanced diagnosis and treatment projects.
The Medical School of Ophthalmology & Optometry, which is based on the Ophthalmology Department, began to carry out undergraduate teaching of optometry since 2002. At present, it offers two undergraduate majors: optometry (Science, 4-year program) and optometric medicine (medicine, 5-year program). Among them, optometry is one of the first schools approved by the Ministry of Education to enroll this major. The first batch of medical technology Master's programs (Optometry) in the country. Optometry and optometric medicine majors have been selected as national first-class undergraduate major construction points and provincial first-class undergraduate major construction points respectively in 2020 and 2021. The Ophthalmology Department enrolls graduate students of clinical medicine (ophthalmology) and medical technology (Optometry). There are more than 50 graduate students on-campus.
The Ophthalmology Department has always adhered to the cultivation of talents as the core, optimized the discipline construction and management, improved the internal governance structure, and formed a long-term construction mechanism. The department has undertaken a number of national, provincial and Nanchong major projects, published more than 200 papers, more than 30 papers were SCI indexed, 1 national invention patent, 6 utility model patents, and 1 software copyright. It has won the Chinese Society of Ophthalmology Award for 1 time, the second prize of Sichuan Science and Technology Progress Award for 1 time, and the second prize of Sichuan Medical Award for 3 times.
